?Assassin Snail

Latin Name: Clea helena

Other Names: Assassin Snail, Snail-eating Snail

If you’ve got a bit of a snail problem in your aquarium, let me introduce you to the Black Assassin Snail. These little critters are like the pest control of the underwater world, and they’re quite the fascinating bunch too.

How hard are they to keep?

These snails are pretty hardy and can adapt to a variety of tank conditions. So, whether you?re new to fish keeping or a seasoned pro, you?ll find these assassins a breeze to care for.

What is its maximum size?

Don?t expect a giant ? they only grow to about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm). Perfect for a community tank without taking up too much room.

Where are they from?

These snails hail from Southeast Asia, particularly around Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

How many can I keep?

They?re quite the socialites and prefer to be in groups. A small gang of 3-5 will do just nicely. They?ll happily take care of your pest snails together.

How compatible are they with other fish?

Black Assassin Snails are generally peaceful and get along well with most fish. They won?t bother your fishy friends, as they?re only after other snails and detritus. Just steer clear of housing them with other snail species you want to keep ? they?ll make a meal out of them!

What are the ideal water conditions?

These snails aren?t too fussy. Aim for a temperature range of 70-80?F (21-27?C), a pH between 7.0 and 8.0, and moderately hard water.

How do you tell the difference between male and female?

Here?s the tricky bit ? you can?t really tell them apart. Males and females look virtually identical to the naked eye. Your best bet for breeding is to keep a group and let nature take its course.

Fun Fact:

Assassin Snails are natures natural way of keeping any pest snails under control.
