Orange Rabbit Snail

Latin Name: Tylomelania zemis

Other Names: Orange Poso Snail, Golden Rabbit Snail

These charming snails are a fantastic addition to any tank, not just for their vibrant colour but also for their intriguing behaviour.

How hard are they to keep?

They?re pretty straightforward to keep, making them suitable for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike. They?re quite hardy and can adapt to a range of conditions, so you won?t need to fuss too much over them.

What is its maximum size?

These snails can grow up to about 3-5 inches (7.5-12.5 cm). They?re on the larger side for aquarium snails, so make sure your tank has enough space for them to roam about.

Where are they from?

The Orange Rabbit Snail hails from Sulawesi, an island in Indonesia. They?re found in freshwater lakes and rivers, often in areas with sandy or muddy bottoms.

How many can I keep?

You can keep a small group of them, around 3-5. They?re social creatures and enjoy the company of their own kind. Just ensure your tank is spacious enough to accommodate them comfortably.

How compatible are they with other fish?

They?re very peaceful and get along well with most fish. They won?t bother their tankmates and are unlikely to be bothered by others due to their hard shell. Just avoid housing them with overly aggressive or large predatory fish that might see them as a snack.

What are the ideal water conditions?

Orange Rabbit Snails thrive in a temperature range of 75-85?F (24-29?C) and prefer a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5. They like harder water, so adding a bit of calcium can help keep their shells in good nick. Regular water changes and good filtration will keep them happy and healthy.

How do you tell the difference between male and female?

Telling the difference between males and females is quite tricky with these snails, as they don?t have obvious external differences. The best way to identify them is through their behaviour during mating, but this isn?t always practical for the casual observer.

Fun Fact:

Orange Rabbit Snails give birth to live young, one at a time. Unlike many snails that lay eggs, these snails produce fully formed miniatures of themselves. It?s quite a sight to see a tiny snail emerge, ready to start exploring the tank.
