How do you tell the difference between male and female? It can be challenging to determine the sex of weather loaches, especially when they are young. However, adult females tend to be slightly larger and plumper than males. Additionally, during breeding season, females may have a rounder belly and exhibit a more pronounced vent. Males may develop small, slightly hardened nuptial pads on their pectoral fins.
Fun Fact: Weather loaches have a unique ability to detect changes in atmospheric pressure, and they often become more active and swim near the surface of the water before rain or stormy weather. This behaviour has given them their common name of “weather loach.”
