Green Calico Platy

Latin Name: Xiphophorus maculatus

Other Names: Green Spotted Platy, Marbled Platy

How hard are they to keep?
Green Calico Platys are very easy to care for, making them ideal for beginners. They are hardy, adaptable, and thrive in a variety of water conditions. With minimal maintenance, they can live happily in most home aquariums.

What is its maximum size?
Green Calico Platys reach about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in length, making them a perfect size for both smaller tanks and larger community aquariums.

Where are they from?
Originally, Platys are native to Central America, particularly the rivers and ponds of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. The Green Calico variety is a selectively bred color morph, developed for its unique and eye-catching appearance.

How many can I keep?
Platys are social fish and do best in small groups of 4-6. Keeping multiple females to each male helps to reduce stress as males can be persistent in courting. They?re also livebearers, so you may find new additions appearing in the tank if you have both sexes!

How compatible are they with other fish?
Green Calico Platys are peaceful and compatible with a wide range of community fish, including tetras, guppies, mollies, and other peaceful species. They do best with non-aggressive tank mates and can cohabitate with other livebearers without issue.

What are the ideal water conditions?
Platys thrive in neutral to slightly alkaline water with a pH between 7.0 and 8.0, and a temperature range of 64-82?F (18-28?C). A well-planted tank with ample swimming space creates an ideal environment, and they?re quite adaptable to various water hardness levels.

How do you tell the difference between male and female?
Males are generally slimmer and have a modified anal fin, known as a gonopodium, which they use for reproduction. Females tend to be rounder and larger, especially when gravid (pregnant).

Fun Fact:
Green Calico Platys are known for their vibrant, marbled colors, which can vary widely from fish to fish, even within the same group. Their stunning patterns and active personalities make them a popular choice among hobbyists looking to add color and liveliness to their aquariums.
