Fantail Goldfish

Latin Name: Carassius auratus

Other Names: Common Goldfish, Fancy Goldfish (for specific varieties)

How hard are they to keep? Fantail Goldfish are generally easy to keep, making them suitable for beginner fishkeepers. However, it’s important to provide them with proper care and conditions to ensure their well-being.

What is its maximum size? Fantail Goldfish can grow up to 8 to 10 inches in length, making them medium-sized goldfish.

Where are they from? Goldfish, including Fantail Goldfish, originated in East Asia and were selectively bred from wild carp.

How many can I keep? It is recommended to keep Fantail Goldfish in a spacious aquarium or pond environment. As they produce more waste compared to other fish species, it’s important to provide ample filtration and space.

How compatible are they with other fish? Fantail Goldfish are generally peaceful and can be kept with other goldfish varieties or similar-sized, peaceful fish species. However, avoid keeping them with fin-nipping or aggressive fish, as their long, flowing fins can make them more vulnerable.

What are the ideal water conditions? Fantail Goldfish prefer cooler water temperatures ranging from 65?F to 75?F (18?C to 24?C). Adequate filtration and regular water changes are necessary to maintain good water quality. They can adapt to a wide range of pH levels but tend to do well in slightly alkaline to neutral water conditions (pH 7.0 to 7.4). The Fantail Goldfish that are for sale have been climatized to our local water conditions.

How do you tell the difference between male and female? It can be challenging to determine the sex of Fantail Goldfish without close examination during breeding periods. Males may have small white or tubercle-like bumps on their gill plates or pectoral fins during spawning. Females may display a rounder body shape, especially when carrying eggs.

Fun Fact: Fantail Goldfish are known for their distinct tail fin, which is forked and spreads out like a fan. Their graceful swimming and attractive finnage make them a favourite among goldfish enthusiasts and hobbyists.
