Snow White Bristlenose

Latin Name: Ancistrus sp.

Other Names: Snow White Ancistrus, White Bristlenose Pleco

How hard are they to keep?
Snow White Bristlenose Plecos are relatively easy to keep and are suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They are hardy fish that can adapt well to stable, varied water conditions, provided they have plenty of places to hide and graze.

What is its maximum size?
Snow White Bristlenose Plecos typically grow to around 4-5 inches (10-12.7 cm) in length, making them a manageable size for many aquarium setups.

Where are they from?
As a colour variation of the Bristlenose Pleco, these fish trace their roots to the river systems of South America, especially within the Amazon Basin. However, the Snow White variety is bred for its unique colouration.

How many can I keep?
It’s generally recommended to keep just one male Snow White Bristlenose per tank unless the tank is large with plenty of hiding spots, as males can become territorial. They can be kept in a variety of tank sizes, with a minimum of 20 gallons (75 litres) recommended.

How compatible are they with other fish?
Snow White Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful and get along well with most community fish, such as tetras, guppies, and other non-aggressive species. They can coexist peacefully with other bottom dwellers, but they might become territorial with other plecos or similar fish if there isn?t enough space.

What are the ideal water conditions?
Snow White Bristlenose Plecos prefer soft to moderately hard water with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. The ideal water temperature is between 68-82?F (20-28?C). They thrive in a tank with driftwood, rocks, and plenty of plants for shelter and grazing.

How do you tell the difference between male and female?
Males develop pronounced bristles on their snouts, while females either have smaller bristles or none at all. Females also tend to have a rounder body shape, particularly when they reach maturity.

Fun Fact:
Snow White Bristlenose Plecos are particularly popular for their unique, bright white colouration. Not only are they visually striking, but they are also fantastic algae eaters, making them a helpful addition to aquariums, as they keep algae growth under control naturally!
