Latin Name: Ambystoma mexicanum
Other Names: Mexican Walking Fish, Water Monster
These quirky amphibians are not only fascinating to look at but also have some pretty interesting behaviours.
How hard are they to keep?
They’re moderately easy to keep, but they do have specific needs. If you?re willing to put in a bit of effort to meet their requirements, they can be quite straightforward to care for. Just make sure you do your homework and set up their tank properly.
What is its maximum size?
Axolotls can grow up to 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) long. So, you?ll need a decent-sized tank to give them enough space to move around comfortably.
Where are they from?
These unique creatures are native to Mexico, specifically to the lake complex of Xochimilco. In the wild, their habitat is quite limited, making them even more special to have in your aquarium.
How many can I keep?
You can keep a few together, but it?s best to have at least a 20-gallon tank for one Axolotl, with an additional 10 gallons for each extra one. They?re not overly social, but they don?t mind company as long as there?s enough space.
How compatible are they with other fish?
Axolotls are best kept on their own or with other Axolotls. They can nip at the fins of slower fish and might eat smaller fish. Plus, fish can sometimes nip at the Axolotl?s gills, causing stress and injury. So, it?s best to avoid mixing them with other species.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Keep the water cool, between 60-68?F (16-20?C), as Axolotls don?t handle warm temperatures well. A pH level between 6.5 and 8.0 is ideal. They prefer soft water, so regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep their environment clean and healthy.
How do you tell the difference between male and female?
Males tend to have longer tails and more prominent cloacas (the area at the base of the tail) compared to females. Females are usually a bit rounder, especially when they?re ready to lay eggs. It can be a bit tricky, but these differences become more noticeable as they mature.
Fun Fact:
Axolotls have incredible regenerative abilities. They can regrow entire limbs, parts of their spine, and even sections of their heart and brain. It?s like having a little superhero in your tank!. The Axolotl is a fantastic and unique addition to any aquarium with their distinctive appearance and fascinating behaviours, they?re sure to be a conversation starter.
