Long Finned Bristlenose

Latin Name: Ancistrus sp.

Other Names: Long-Fin Bristlenose, Bushynose Pleco

How hard are they to keep?
Long-Finned Bristlenose Plecos are generally easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. They are hardy and tolerant of a variety of water conditions, as long as the tank is well-maintained and stable.

What is its maximum size?
Long-Finned Bristlenose Plecos grow to a maximum of around 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) in length, with males being slightly larger than females.

Where are they from?
As a variation of the Bristlenose Pleco, these fish trace their origins to the river systems of South America, primarily in the Amazon Basin. However, the long-finned variety has been selectively bred for its distinctive, flowing fins.

How many can I keep?
Generally, one Long-Finned Bristlenose Pleco per tank is recommended, especially if your tank is under 30 gallons. They can be territorial with other plecos, particularly males, so a larger tank with plenty of hiding spaces is essential if you plan to keep more than one.

How compatible are they with other fish?
Long-Finned Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish, such as tetras, guppies, and gouramis. They can also coexist with other bottom dwellers as long as there?s enough space and hiding spots to prevent territorial disputes.

What are the ideal water conditions?
They prefer soft to moderately hard water with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 and temperatures ranging from 68-82?F (20-28?C). Adding driftwood, rocks, and caves will make them feel more at home, as they love places to hide and graze.

How do you tell the difference between male and female?
Males tend to have larger, more prominent bristles on their noses, while females either have smaller bristles or none at all. Females are also typically rounder in the body, especially when mature.

Fun Fact:
The Long-Finned Bristlenose Pleco is not only a striking addition to any tank due to its unique fin shape but also a fantastic algae eater. This combination of beauty and functionality has made it a favourite among aquarists looking to add both flair and practicality to their tanks.
