Golden Gourami

Latin Name: Trichogaster trichopterus

Other Names: Three Spot Gourami, Blue Gourami

How hard are they to keep? Golden Gourami’s are considered relatively easy to keep. They are suitable for beginner fishkeepers with some basic knowledge of aquarium care.

What is its maximum size? Golden Gourami’s can grow up to 4 to 6 inches in length, making them a medium-sized gourami species.

Where are they from? Golden Gourami’s are native to Southeast Asia, specifically found in slow-moving freshwater rivers, lakes, and swamps in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

How many can I keep? It is recommended to keep Golden Gourami’s in small groups if you have a larger aquarium. Ideally, keep one male with two or more females to reduce aggression and provide a more natural social structure.

How compatible are they with other fish? Golden Gourami’s are generally peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful community fish of similar size. They can sometimes be territorial towards other gourami species or fish with long flowing fins. It is important to provide enough hiding spots and territories in the aquarium to minimize conflicts.

What are the ideal water conditions? Golden Gourami’s prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. The ideal water temperature for them ranges from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C). They can tolerate a wide range of pH levels but do best in a range of 6.0 to 7.5. Adequate filtration and regular water changes are necessary to maintain water quality. The Golden Gourami’s that are for sale have been climatized to our local water conditions.

How do you tell the difference between male and female? Males often have more vibrant colours, especially during breeding periods. They exhibit longer and more pointed dorsal fins compared to females. Females usually have rounder bodies and shorter, more rounded fins.

Fun Fact: Golden Gourami’s are known for their unique labyrinth organ, which allows them to breathe atmospheric air. This adaptation enables them to survive in oxygen-deprived environments, such as stagnant waters or areas with low oxygen levels. They can periodically come to the water’s surface to gulp air, which they absorb through a specialized breathing structure.
