Overview

Platy Care at a Glance

Overview

Platies (Xiphophorus maculatus and Xiphophorus variatus) are small, active tropical fish available in a wide range of colours including reds, oranges, yellows, blues, and mixed patterns.

They are closely related to guppies and share many of the same care requirements, making them one of the most beginner-friendly fish species available.

Platies are peaceful community fish that are constantly active, bringing colour and movement to the middle areas of the fish tank.

Scientific name: Xiphophorus maculatus / variatus
Common name: Platy
Adult size: 4–6 cm
Ideal tank size: 60 cm fish tank
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH: 7.0–8.2
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore
Difficulty: Beginner friendly
Lifespan: 2–3 years

Identification

Platies are small, colourful fish with short bodies and rounded fins. They are available in a huge range of colour varieties and patterns.

Male and female platies can be identified fairly easily:

  • Males are smaller and have a pointed anal fin (gonopodium)

  • Females are larger, rounder, and have a fan-shaped anal fin

Females may also show a gravid spot when carrying fry.

Tank Size

Platies grow to around 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches).

A fish tank with a minimum length of around 60 cm is recommended for a small group.

Because they are active fish, larger tanks provide a more stable environment and allow them to display natural behaviour.

Water Conditions

Typical platy care guidelines include:

  • Temperature: 20–26°C

  • pH: 7.0–8.2

  • Water hardness: Moderate to hard

Platies prefer slightly harder and more alkaline water compared to many other tropical fish.

However, platies sold at Friendly Fish Aquatics have already been acclimatised to local tap water in Harlow and across Essex, meaning most customers can keep them successfully without making special adjustments.

Natural Habitat

Platies originate from Central America, including Mexico and parts of Guatemala.

They are typically found in slow-moving rivers, canals, and ponds with plenty of vegetation.

Because of this, they do well in fish tanks that include:

  • Live plants

  • Open swimming areas

  • Gentle water flow

Setting Up the Fish Tank

A well-designed platy fish tank should include a mix of plants and open space.

Good plant choices include:

  • Java Fern

  • Anubias

  • Cryptocoryne species

  • Hygrophila

  • Floating plants

Plants provide shelter, especially for young fish, and help create a natural environment.

Behaviour and Group Size

Platies are active, social fish that enjoy being kept with others.

They can be kept in:

  • Mixed groups

  • Groups with more females than males

Because they are livebearers, keeping males and females together will often result in baby fish (fry).

A common ratio is one male to two or three females to reduce stress on females.

Feeding Platies

Platies are omnivores and will accept a wide variety of foods.

A balanced diet includes:

  • High-quality flake food

  • Micro pellets

  • Frozen foods (such as bloodworm or brine shrimp)

  • Occasional vegetable-based foods

A varied diet helps maintain strong health and bright colours.

Tank Mates

Platies are peaceful community fish and mix well with many other species.
