Yellow Platy

Latin Name: Xiphophorus maculatus

Other Names: Sunburst Platy, Gold Platy

How hard are they to keep?
Yellow Platys are very beginner-friendly and easy to keep, thanks to their hardy nature and adaptability. They require minimal maintenance and thrive in a variety of water conditions, making them a great choice for new aquarists.

What is its maximum size?
Yellow Platys grow to a modest 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in length, which makes them suitable for smaller tanks and community aquariums alike.

Where are they from?
Platys are originally from Central America, particularly Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, where they inhabit calm rivers and ponds. The Yellow variety is a selectively bred color morph, prized for its bright, sunny hue.

How many can I keep?
Platys are social fish and do well in groups of 4-6. It’s best to have more females than males, as males tend to be active and can pester females. Be mindful that Platys are livebearers, so you may find new fry appearing if you have both males and females!

How compatible are they with other fish?
Yellow Platys are peaceful and get along with a wide variety of tank mates, including tetras, guppies, mollies, and other gentle species. They do well in community tanks and add a pop of color with their vibrant appearance.

What are the ideal water conditions?
These fish prefer neutral to slightly alkaline water, with a pH between 7.0 and 8.0. The ideal temperature range is 64-82°F (18-28°C). They are quite adaptable to different water hardness levels, and a well-planted tank with open swimming areas suits them perfectly.

How do you tell the difference between male and female?
Males are typically smaller and have a gonopodium (a modified anal fin used for reproduction). Females tend to be rounder, especially when gravid (pregnant), and are generally a bit larger than males.

Fun Fact:
Yellow Platys are known for their cheerful, bright colour that can lighten up any tank. They are also prolific breeders, and their fry are usually easy to raise, making them a popular choice for aquarists interested in breeding livebearers
