Flame Tetra

Latin Name: Hyphessobrycon flammeus

Other Names: Flame Tetra, Red Flame Tetra

How hard are they to keep? Flame Tetras are relatively easy to keep and are suitable for beginner aquarists. They are hardy and adaptable fish.

What is their maximum size? Flame Tetras usually reach a maximum size of around 2 inches (5 cm).

Where are they from? Flame Tetras are native to the rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly the Amazon Basin.

How many can I keep? Flame Tetras are shoaling fish, and it is recommended to keep them in groups of at least six to eight individuals. Larger groups will provide a more natural and visually appealing display.

How compatible are they with other fish? Flame Tetras are generally peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful community fish. However, they have long flowing fins, so caution should be taken when selecting tank mates to avoid fin nipping species. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful tetras, danios, gourami’s, and rasboras.

What are the ideal water conditions? Flame Tetras thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.5. The temperature should be maintained between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C). They prefer well-filtered water with soft to moderately hard water hardness. Providing live plants and some hiding spots in the aquarium will create a more natural environment for them. The Flame Tetras that are for sale have been climatized to our local water conditions.

How do you tell the difference between Male and female? Distinguishing between male and female Flame Tetras can be challenging. Males tend to exhibit brighter and more intense coloring, especially during breeding season. Females may have a slightly rounder belly when carrying eggs. However, visual differences between sexes are not very pronounced in Flame Tetras.

Fun Fact: Flame Tetras are known for their vibrant red and orange colours, resembling flickering flames. Their striking appearance and peaceful nature make them a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts, adding brightness and beauty to any tank.
