Common Pleco

Latin Name: Hypostomus plecostomus

Other Names: Common Pleco, Suckermouth Catfish

How hard are they to keep? Common plecostomus, commonly known as Plecos, are generally considered to be beginner-friendly and relatively easy to keep. They are hardy and adaptable to a wide range of water conditions.

What is its maximum size? Common Plecos have the potential to grow quite large. They can reach sizes of up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) or even larger in some cases. However, in most home aquariums, they usually grow to around 12-15 inches (30-38 centimeters).

Where are they from? Plecos are native to South America and can be found in rivers across the continent, particularly in the Amazon River basin.

How many can I keep? It is recommended to keep only one Pleco in the aquarium due to their territorial nature and potential for aggression towards other Plecos. However, if you have a larger tank with adequate hiding spots and territories, multiple Plecos can coexist.

How compatible are they with other fish? Plecos are generally peaceful and can coexist with a wide variety of other fish as long as they are not overly aggressive or territorial. They may occasionally nibble on the slime coats of slower-moving fish, but this behaviour is usually harmless.

What are the ideal water conditions? Plecos are adaptable to various water conditions. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. The temperature should be maintained between 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C). Providing hiding spots, driftwood, and vegetation in the aquarium is important. They also appreciate clean, well-filtered water. The Plecos that are for sale have all been climatized to our local water conditions.

How do you tell the difference between Male and female? It can be challenging to determine the sex of Plecos. However, mature males may have longer pectoral fins, broader heads, and more bristles on their cheeks compared to females. Females may have a rounder body shape, especially when carrying eggs.

Fun Fact: Plecos are well-known for their ability to attach themselves to surfaces using their specialized mouthparts. They have a sucker-like mouth that allows them to cling to rocks, aquarium glass, and other surfaces. This behaviour helps them to stay in place, navigate their environment, and feed on algae and other organic matter.

These can be found in tank Number: 20
