How hard are they to keep? Black Platys are generally considered to be relatively easy to keep and are suitable for beginner aquarists. They can tolerate a wide range of water conditions and are adaptable to different environments.

What is its maximum size? Black Platys typically reach a maximum size of around 2-2.5 inches (5-6 cm).

Where are they from? Black Platys are native to Central America, specifically Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

How many can I keep? They are social and prefer to be in groups, so keeping them in groups of 4-6 individuals is ideal. However, they can also be kept alone or with other compatible fish species.

How compatible are they with other fish? Black Platys are generally peaceful and compatible with a variety of community fish. They can be kept with other peaceful species like tetras, guppies, mollies, and swordtails. Avoid aggressive or nippy species as tankmates.

What are the ideal water conditions? Black Platys can thrive in a wide range of water conditions. They prefer a temperature between 70-82°F (21-28°C), a pH level of 6.8-7.8, and moderately hard water with a hardness of 9-20 dGH. How do you tell the difference between Male and female? Males typically have a modified anal fin called a gonopodium, which is used for reproduction. The gonopodium is longer and more pointed compared to the female’s rounded anal fin. Females tend to be larger and have a more rounded body shape.
